Principle of the use of Geotextiles
for ground stabilisation. Woven and
unwoven geotextiles provide an effective
solution to the age- old problem of
constructing stable granular layers
over soft foundation soils. This fundamental
problem, and the solution using geotextile,
is shown in Figure 1.
When a granular layer is constructed
directly on a soft subgrade, external
loadings (e.g. traffic) cause intermixing
of the granular material with the
soft subgrade. This results in a loss
of bearing strength of the granular
layer and premature failure of the
structure.
